Last year around this time, I was juggling classes, job hunting, and a fair bit of anxiety. As a Chinese graduate student studying in the U.S., I experienced the most intense period of fall recruiting. Deloitte was high on my list, especially with its consulting and audit tracks. I had heard from others that it’s one of the few firms that’s not completely closed off to international students, so I took it seriously.

Applications opened earlier than I expected. Some roles were live by late August, and most were up in September. I didn’t wait around. I kept checking both my university’s career portal and Deloitte’s official site. If you’re reading this now, I’d say—don’t just update your resume overnight. Really think about what you’ve done. For me, it was less about flashy titles and more about the stories behind each project. One of my class assignments, for example, became the basis of a bullet point where I explained how we navigated group conflicts to get things done.

The visa situation? Yeah, it’s tough. But Deloitte’s not the worst when it comes to international hiring. A decent number of roles accept OPT, and a handful are open to H-1B sponsorship. I took the time to read every job post closely—especially the “Work Authorization” part—so I didn’t waste time applying where I wasn’t eligible. It saved me both time and frustration.

What really stood out to me during the process was the video interview. It wasn’t live—just a one-way recording. I had to answer behavioral questions like “Tell me about a time you faced a challenge.” I’d practiced a few answers using STAR, but I tried not to sound robotic. I just told the story like I was talking to a friend. One story I used involved a project where everything went sideways, and I had to pick up the slack unexpectedly.

Something else that helped? Going to Deloitte’s info sessions. Even though they were online, I made sure to show up and ask questions. I also messaged a couple of alumni from my school who were working at Deloitte. Not everyone replied, but the few who did were incredibly helpful. One even gave me insight into how the interview process worked behind the scenes.

In the end, preparing for Deloitte’s fall recruitment taught me more than I expected. It wasn’t just about landing an interview—it forced me to reflect on what I’ve done, what I bring to the table, and how I tell that story. If you’re an international student getting ready for this season, I’d say: start now, focus on what really matters, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes, that makes all the difference.
