I switched to a career in tech and landed at a bank. Although I didn’t join a top FAANG company, my journey might inspire others. I hold a bachelor's degree in Finance from NYU and a master's in Computer Science from Northeastern University. I made the shift from Finance to CS during my undergrad. Why Northeastern? It had a slightly lower admissions requirement, and I was seeking more stability at the time.
Switching fields wasn’t easy, especially from Finance to Computer Science. But I was determined, and my family supported me. I had to balance studying finance while learning the basics of CS. I was incredibly busy during that time, spending nearly every day in the library. Looking back, it was exhausting.
I have decent self-discipline, so I didn’t enroll in algorithm classes. If you struggle with self-control, I recommend taking the class or sticking to a structured approach! I started learning Python on my own. In my spare time, I took courses, read books, and solved practice problems online to improve my programming skills.
There was one major issue: project experience. As a finance major, my resume was almost empty in that area. This made the job search more difficult later on. So, I looked for bootcamps and chose Drill Insight’s TCS program.
The TCS program is a full-stack course partnered with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase. It’s taught in English, and the main project is to build a stock trading system. At first, I was overwhelmed. The teaching style simulated a real work environment, which was new to me. I had to consider complex business logic, which made it challenging. But it was intense, and I worked on the project for over three months. I also reached out to my mentor frequently, which really helped.
After completing the project, Drill Insight assisted me in revamping my resume. The full-stack project added significant value to my resume. I then applied to Dropbox. After receiving an interview invite, I did mock interviews to prepare. In the end, I received an offer from Dropbox!
