A lot of international students in North America often ask the same question when job hunting: “How to find a summer internship?” It’s not an easy task, especially with all the competition. The truth is, landing a good internship takes time, preparation, and a bit of strategy. Just blindly applying online usually doesn’t work well. For big-name companies, summer internship applications often open as early as the fall before, so starting early really matters.

One of the first things you should do is work on your resume and projects. A solid resume doesn’t just list tools or programming languages. What really makes it stand out is how clearly you explain what you’ve done—what role you played in the project, what problems came up, and how you solved them. Your projects don’t have to be fancy. They could be from class or something you built yourself. As long as the idea is clear and you learned something from it, it’s worth including.

The next step is to use your network. This is where platforms like LinkedIn become useful. Try reaching out to alumni or people with similar backgrounds who are working at companies you’re interested in. When sending a message, keep it short and specific—who you are, what role you want to apply for, and why you’re reaching out. Attach your resume, be polite but genuine, and avoid sounding like a template.

Interview preparation is another part of the process. For technical roles, many companies have online coding tests or tech screens. Practice common data structures and algorithms on sites like LeetCode. For non-tech positions, behavioral interviews are more common. Try to prepare a few real examples that show how you work in teams, deal with problems, or take initiative.

Most importantly, don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back right away. Finding an internship takes time, and rejection is part of the process. What matters is learning from it, improving your materials, and trying again. If you stay consistent and keep your goal in mind, your effort will pay off. Summer internships aren’t easy to get, but with the right steps, they’re definitely within reach.
