OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a popular legal way for international students in North America to work after they graduate. It lets you get real internship or job experience in the U.S. after finishing your studies. Knowing how the application works and preparing early is important to avoid any delays. Usually, OPT lasts for 12 months, and students in STEM fields can apply for an extension.

The first step is to talk with your school’s international student office. Most schools want you to apply within 90 days before graduation or within 60 days after. They’ll update your I-20 form with your OPT start date and other info. This update is key—if it’s missing, your application might run into trouble.

Then you’ll need to fill out and send in the USCIS I-765 form to apply for work authorization. Along with it, you include copies of your passport, your I-94 (which shows when you entered the U.S.), your updated I-20, two passport photos, and the application fee. After submitting, USCIS will send you a receipt so you can track your application online. Sometimes, they ask for additional documents (called an RFE), and if that happens, you want to reply promptly to avoid delays.

The whole approval process can take a few weeks or even a couple of months. When approved, you’ll get an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)—this is proof you’re allowed to work. You can’t start working until you have this card. During OPT, make sure your job is related to your field and keep your school updated with your employer and address.

Also, you can’t be unemployed for more than 90 days during OPT, or it might affect your status. To stay safe, apply early, actively seek new job opportunities, and ensure you maintain your legal status.

In short, the OPT application isn’t too complicated, but you have to be careful with each step. Get everything ready ahead of time, send your paperwork on time, and keep an eye on your application status. That way, you can make the most of OPT and get good work experience in the U.S.
